The Medici family, also known as the House of Medici, originated from Mugello region of Tuscany, was the largest Italian banking family in the 15th century, and one of the most powerful of all the European dynasties. They ruled Florence for over 300 years, producing four Popes of the Catholic Church and two queens of France, and financing some of the greatest works of art produced during the Renaissance.

With their power glorified, the Medici family financed the invention of the piano and opera, funded the construction of Saint Peter's Basilica and Santa Maria del Fiore, and were patrons of Brunelleschi, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Machiavelli and Galileo among many others in the arts and culture.

The history of the Medici Tarot cards goes back to the mid-15th century. Only the Medici Tarot has a Grand Duke card featuring Cosimo de’Medici, Grand Tuskan.
